Sara Baartman’s [Black]Deviant Body in [Transcultural] Transit

The seminar “Sara Baartman’s [Black]Deviant Body in [Transcultural] Transit: Abdellatif Kechiche’s Venus Noire/Black Venus (2011)” was delivered by Dr. María Frías Rudolphi (U. da Coruña) on November 24, 2015 at the Faculty of Philology and Translation in Vigo. As part of the research project “Bodies in Transit: Making Difference in Globalized Cultures”, the talk considered the way in which Kechiche’s film represents Baartman’s body and legacy, and how contemporary discourse surrounding Black women’s bodies reflects many of the same tropes and stereotypes originally used to frame Baartman’s story.
